Hardy County, located in the eastern panhandle of West Virginia, was formed on December 10, 1785, from the western edge of Hampshire County. Named in honor of Samuel Hardy, a renowned Virginian lawyer and politician, the county is nestled in the Allegheny Mountains, offering picturesque views and abundant natural beauty.

The area originally belonged to the Shawnee Indian tribes, with Europeans first arriving around the mid-18th century. The ensuing conflicts between settlers and Native Americans eventually paved the way for the region's development, as European settlers established farming communities and mining industries.

During the American Revolutionary War, the region experienced significant British and Tory raids. In the Civil War, Hardy County witnessed minor skirmishes between Union and Confederate forces but never experienced any major battles.

The rich history of Hardy County is reflected in three thriving towns: Moorefield, the county seat; Wardensville; and the unincorporated community of Lost River. Boasting numerous historical sites, visitors and residents can explore the 150-year-old Presbyterian Church, the 200-year-old McCoy House and Fort Pleasant, an 18th-century plantation dating back to 1769.

One fun fact about Hardy County is the "Heritage Weekend," a yearly celebration held on the last weekend of September. This event commemorates the county's history, customs, and traditions through various exhibits, historical re-enactments, crafts, food, and entertainment, attracting people from all over the country to experience Hardy County's unique culture.
