Lewis County, located in the northwest-central part of West Virginia, was created on December 18, 1816, and named in honor of Colonel Charles Lewis, a Revolutionary War hero and early pioneer of the region. The county is known for its lush rolling hills, picturesque landscapes, and vibrant history.

Weston, the county seat, was established in 1818 and quickly became a thriving regional hub due to the prominent role it played in the transportation and trade industries. This was largely due to the development of the Weston and Gauley Bridge Turnpike, as well as the expansion of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad.

Throughout its history, Lewis County has been associated with various industries, including agriculture, oil and gas exploration, and a flourishing glass industry in the 19th and early 20th centuries. The county's rich natural resources, such as timber and coal, also played a vital role in its economic development.

One fun fact about Lewis County is that it is home to the "World's Largest Sycamore Tree." Located in the town of Jane Lew, the sycamore tree is believed to be over 500 years old, with a circumference of 26 feet and a height of over 100 feet. The tree's enormous size and unique appearance have made it a popular attraction for both locals and tourists alike.
