Marion County, located in the great state of West Virginia, was established on January 14, 1842, and was carved out from parts of neighboring Monongalia and Harrison Counties. Named in honor of General Francis Marion, the Revolutionary War hero known as the "Swamp Fox," the county occupies around 311 square miles of area.

Fairmont, the county seat, developed quickly with the progression of the industrial revolution. The diverse economy of Marion County stemmed from the abundance of natural resources such as coal, oil, and natural gas.

One noteworthy historical moment in Marion County is the creation of the first Father's Day observance. On July 5, 1908, the Williams Memorial Methodist Episcopal Church in Fairmont held a special sermon to honor fathers who had passed away in the Monongah Mine disaster, which had killed 361 men. This event, although not widely recognized at the time, marked the first known Father's Day observation.

Fun fact: Marion County is home to Prickett's Fort State Park, a reconstructed refuge fort used by early settlers during the French and Indian War in the 1700s. The park features a reconstructed fort, an interpretive center, and beautiful trails for visitors to learn about and appreciate the region's history.
