Marshall County, located in the great state of West Virginia, was formed on March 12, 1835, from parts of Ohio County. It was named after the influential Chief Justice of the United States, John Marshall, who held the position from 1801 to 1835. The county is situated in the northern panhandle of West Virginia and is bordered by the Ohio River to the west.

The city of Moundsville serves as the county seat, and some of the early European settlers of the region originated from Germany, England, and Ireland. The initial growth of the county was largely attributed to the development of the glass and pottery industries in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Worthy of note is the area's rich indigenous history, with the Grave Creek Mound, one of the largest conical burial mounds in the United States, built by the Adena culture around 250-150 B.C. The mound, located in Moundsville, towers 62 feet high and approximately 240 feet in diameter, and it currently resides within the Grave Creek Mound Archaeological Complex.

Fun fact: The West Virginia State Penitentiary, which operated from 1876 to 1995 and housed many of the region's most dangerous criminals, is also located in Moundsville. Today, the gothic-style building is a popular tourist attraction offering guided tours and special events, like seasonal haunted tours, for history enthusiasts and thrill-seekers seeking a spine-tingling experience.
