Mason County, located in the great state of West Virginia, was formed on January 2, 1804. It was named in honor of George Mason, a Virginian statesman who was a delegate to the U.S. Constitutional Convention and played a vital role in drafting the Bill of Rights. Originally a part of Kanawha County, its establishment came as a result of rapid population growth in the region during the late 18th and early 19th centuries.

The county seat, Point Pleasant, predates the formation of Mason County itself, as it was established in 1774. Point Pleasant has significant historical importance, as the Battle of Point Pleasant took place there in 1774 between Native American tribes and Virginia militia led by Colonel Andrew Lewis. This battle, which is considered to be the first engagement of the American Revolutionary War, resulted in a victory for the Virginia militia and contributed to a shift in frontier settlement patterns.

Agriculture and industry played crucial roles in the development of Mason County over the years, with fertile land and natural resources aiding economic growth. Farming, timber, and salt extraction were primary industries during the 19th century, while early 20th-century development saw the emergence of glass, brick, and pottery manufacturing.

A fun fact about the Mason County region is the Mothman legend, which became famous in the 1960s. The Mothman is a creature reportedly seen in the Point Pleasant area and became a part of local folklore. The infamous Silver Bridge collapse in 1967, which resulted in the loss of 46 lives, was later associated with Mothman sightings. Today, the town holds an annual Mothman Festival and houses a Mothman Museum, attracting tourists and cryptozoology enthusiasts to the area.
