McDowell County, West Virginia, is a region steeped in history and natural beauty. Established in 1858, the county was named in honor of James McDowell, a prominent political figure who served as the Governor of Virginia from 1843 to 1846. Located in the southern part of the state, McDowell County is part of the Appalachian Mountains and lies within the Bluefield Micropolitan Statistical Area.

During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, McDowell County was a booming coal mining region. The abundance of coal and railroads in the area attracted numerous workers, as well as major coal mining companies. The population of the county reached its peak in 1950 with over 100,000 residents. However, as the coal industry went into decline, so did the prosperity of the region. Many companies shut down, leading to a significant decrease in the population.

McDowell County's rich history is also characterized by its cultural heritage, with a diverse population of African Americans, Italians, and Eastern Europeans who traveled here to work in the flourishing coal industry. This diversity is still celebrated today through various cultural events and festivals highlighting the county's unique history.

One fun fact about McDowell County is that it was the birthplace of American country musician Gary Stewart, known for his unique, high-octane honky-tonk style and his 1975 hit single "She's Actin' Single (I'm Drinkin' Doubles)." Born in Jenkins, Kentucky in 1945, Stewart later moved with his family to McDowell County, where he developed his love for music and distinguished voice before embarking on his successful career in Nashville.
