Nicholas County, located in the great state of West Virginia, was established on January 30, 1818. The county was named in honor of Wilson Cary Nicholas, an esteemed Virginian planter, soldier, and political leader, who also served as a Colonel during the American Revolutionary War and later as Governor of Virginia from 1814-1816.

The county covers an area of approximately 654 square miles and it now has a population of around 25,000. Richwood and Summersville are the two main urban areas found within the county, with Summersville being the county seat.

Historically, Nicholas County's economy relied significantly on industries like lumbering, coal mining, and agriculture. In the early 20th century, the lumber industry supported the growth and prosperity of Richwood, and it grew to become the heart of the region's lumber boom. The construction of the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway further spurred industrial development in the area.

One interesting fun fact about Nicholas County is the existence of the Carnifex Ferry Battlefield State Park, the site of a key Civil War battle fought on September 10, 1861. The Union's victory in this battle contributed to the push to create the state of West Virginia, which gained statehood in 1863. The park now contains marked historical exhibits and several hiking trails for visitors to explore and learn about this critical moment in American history.
