Ohio County is situated in the northern panhandle of the great state of West Virginia and was created on January 6, 1777. It was named after the Ohio River, which serves as the county's western border and gets its name from the Iroquoian word "ohi-yo," meaning "great river."

Ohio County holds Wheeling, the state's first capital, which was established in 1795. Wheeling served as the capital of West Virginia twice during the state's history - first from 1863 to 1870 and then from 1875 to 1885.

One of the key events in the county's history occurred at the beginning of the Civil War, when the Wheeling Convention was held in 1861. Delegates from territories that opposed Virginia's secession from the Union met at this convention, ultimately leading to the birth of West Virginia as a new state in the Union in 1863.

A fun fact about Ohio County is that it is home to the Wheeling Suspension Bridge, which was once the world's longest suspension bridge with a central span of 1,010 feet when it was completed in 1849. Designed by Charles Ellet Jr, the bridge remains an iconic landmark and an engineering marvel for its time, as it still stands today as the oldest suspension bridge in the United States still in use.
