Pleasants County, located in the great state of West Virginia, was established on March 29, 1851. It was named in honor of James Pleasants Jr., a distinguished Virginia statesman who served as a congressman and later as the state's 22nd governor from 1822 to 1825.

The county is situated in the northwestern part of West Virginia, bordering the Ohio River. Its county seat is the city of St. Marys, which was founded in 1849 by Alexander Creel. Early settlements in the area mainly consisted of small farms and communities.

Pleasants County played a significant role in the development of the oil and gas industry during the 19th and 20th centuries. It was part of the "oil boom" that attracted investment and settlers to the region, boosting its economy.

A fun fact about Pleasants County is that it is home to the Willow Island Hydroelectric Plant located on the Ohio River. This plant, completed in 1981, is the only renewable green energy project in the county and provides clean energy across the region. The plant's dam also provides a beautiful view of the Ohio River and offers recreational opportunities for locals and visitors alike.
