Preston County is located in the northeastern part of the great state of West Virginia, USA. The county was officially created in 1818 from a portion of Monongalia County and was named in honor of James Patton Preston, the 20th Governor of Virginia. The county seat is Kingwood, which was established by an act of the Virginia General Assembly in 1811.

In its early years, the economy of Preston County was primarily driven by agriculture, coal mining, and the lumbering industry. The region saw a significant increase in population during the 19th and early 20th centuries, as these industries expanded and transportation networks improved-with the arrival of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad in 1884 being a significant catalyst for growth.

One fun fact about Preston County is that it is home to the largest man-made lake located entirely within West Virginia: Big Dolly Sods. This lake is a popular destination for fishing and boating activities. Additionally, the county boasts several scenic state parks and natural landmarks, including Cooper's Rock State Forest and Cathedral State Park, which contains one of the last old-growth hemlock forests in the eastern United States. The area is also known for its unique ecological features and outdoor recreational opportunities, making it an ideal destination for nature enthusiasts.
