Putnam County is located in the western part of the great state of West Virginia, USA. Established on March 11, 1848, it was named in honor of General Israel Putnam, a hero of the American Revolutionary War. The county seat is the city of Winfield, which was named after General Winfield Scott, another important figure in American history.

In the early days, the region was inhabited by Native American tribes, including Mingo and Shawnee, who relied on the nearby Kanawha River for resources. European settlers first started to arrive in the mid-1700s, and over time, the area saw an increase in population and development.

The county was mainly based on an agrarian economy, with tobacco and corn being primary crops. As transportation systems developed-first the James River and Kanawha Turnpike, and later the Kanawha Canal and the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway-industry, commerce, and trade grew in Putnam County. This growth continued into the 20th century, with the development of natural resource industries like timber and coal.

A fun fact about Putnam County is that it is home to the West Virginia Pumpkin Festival held every October in the city of Milton. The festival, which began in 1986, is an annual event that celebrates the pumpkin harvest and offers a variety of entertainment, food, and crafts for attendees to enjoy. Each year, the festival attracts thousands of visitors and locals alike, making it a significant event in the county's cultural calendar.
