Raleigh County, located in the great state of West Virginia, has a rich history that dates back to its creation in 1850. The county was formed by an act of the Virginia General Assembly in January 1850 from portions of Fayette County, then part of Virginia. It was officially named after Sir Walter Raleigh, the famed English explorer and writer who played an essential role in establishing the first English colonies in the New World.

The city of Beckley serves as the county seat and was also established in 1850. It was named after John James Beckley, the first Librarian of Congress and Clerk of the House of Representatives. Raleigh County played a role during the Civil War, as the area saw skirmishes between the Confederate and Union forces.

Raleigh County experienced significant growth and development due to the rich natural resources in the region, particularly coal. The county became a booming coal mining region in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, attracting numerous workers and contributing greatly to the local and regional economy.

As for a fun fact, Raleigh County is home to one of West Virginia's most iconic natural wonders, the New River Gorge. The New River Gorge Bridge, completed in 1977, is the state's most prominent landmark and the third-highest bridge in the United States. Each year, the "Bridge Day" festival is held at the gorge, and participants engage in a variety of adrenaline-inducing activities, including BASE jumping and rappelling off the bridge.
