Ritchie County, located in the great state of West Virginia, was established on February 18, 1843. It was named in honor of Thomas Ritchie, a prominent Virginia journalist and co-founder of the Richmond Enquirer, a leading proponent for westward expansion. Originally, Ritchie County was part of territories belonging to Harrison, Lewis, and Wood Counties in Virginia, before West Virginia became a separate state.

The county covers approximately 454 square miles, with the county seat located in Harrisville. The population of Ritchie County has remained relatively stable over the years, with around 10,000 residents as of 2020.

The area has a rich history, involving settlements, agriculture, and industry. The Native American tribes, such as Mingo and Shawnee, originally inhabited the region. European settlers first arrived in the 1770s, taking advantage of the fertile land for agriculture. Ritchie County later became a center for oil and natural gas production in the 19th and 20th centuries, which fueled its economy.

One fun fact about Ritchie County is that it is home to several historical sites, including the Pennsboro B&O Depot, a former train station built in 1909 that served as a vital transportation hub. The depot has been restored and now serves as a museum showcasing the history of the train station and local area.
