Roane County is located in the great state of West Virginia and was officially created on March 11, 1856, by an act of the Virginia General Assembly. The county is named in honor of Spencer Roane, a distinguished jurist and statesman from Virginia who was instrumental in providing guidance during the early years of West Virginia's statehood.

The county seats two incorporated towns, Spencer and Reedy, with Spencer being the largest and the county seat. The history of Roane County is closely linked to its rich natural resources, primarily agriculture, salt extraction, and timber industry. Farming has played an essential role in shaping the county's culture and identity.

Roane County was a thriving agricultural region in its early years which attracted settlers, and it witnessed steady growth in population during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The discovery of oil and natural gas during this time further boosted the economy and attracted new businesses.

Though the 20th century was marked by economic challenges due to the decline of the local timber industry, Roane County has remained a picturesque and cherished part of West Virginia.

A fun fact about Roane County is their annual event called the "WV Black Walnut Festival." Held every October in Spencer, this festival celebrates black walnuts, a local, abundant resource in the area. It features various exciting activities, including parades, arts and crafts, music performances, and lots of delicious food. The festival aims to showcase the cultural heritage and talent in Roane County and attract tourists from nearby regions.
