Taylor County, nestled in the great state of West Virginia, was formed on January 19, 1844, from parts of Barbour, Harrison, and Marion Counties. The county is named in honor of Senator John Taylor of Caroline, who was a distinguished soldier and statesman from Virginia.

During the early years of the county's formation, agriculture and livestock formed the basis of its economy. As the area developed, the discovery of natural resources, especially coal and timber, led to a boom in mining and lumber industries in the late-19th and early-20th centuries. The Baltimore and Ohio Railroad, which passes through Taylor County, played a crucial role in the rapid expansion of these industries by providing transportation for resources and connecting the communities within the county.

Grafton, the largest city and the county seat of Taylor County, holds historical significance as the birthplace of Mother's Day. Anna Marie Jarvis, a Grafton native, organized the country's first official Mother's Day in 1908 at Andrews Methodist Episcopal Church, which is now the International Mother's Day Shrine. This fun fact highlights the region's unique contribution to our national cultural heritage.
