Tucker County, located in the mountainous region of West Virginia, holds a rich history that dates back to the early 18th century. It was established in 1856 and was named in honor of Henry St. George Tucker Sr., a prominent Virginia judge, congressman, and jurist. The county, which spans an area of 421 square miles, is situated in the Allegheny Mountain Range and is home to several impressive natural features, such as the Dolly Sods wilderness and Blackwater Falls.

The region was initially settled due to its abundance of timber and later on, the development of coal mining in the late 1800s propelled its economy forward. The timber and coal industries saw the need for improved transportation systems, prompting the development of railroads in the area. Among the most significant of these railroads was the West Virginia Central and Pittsburg Railway, founded by Senator Henry Gassaway Davis in 1880. The railroad played a crucial role in the growth and prosperity of Tucker County, driving the thriving industries and aiding in the establishment of towns such as Thomas and Davis.

During the early 20th century, change once again swept through Tucker County as the demand for coal decreased, and the last railroad-Blackwater Canyon Railroad-ceased its operations in 1959. Over time, the now-diminished industries made way for tourism, with the beautiful landscapes capturing the hearts of nature enthusiasts. Today, Tucker County is well known for its outdoor recreational activities, and along with ski resorts like Canaan Valley, it continues to be an attractive tourist destination.

Fun Fact: The Blackwater Falls, located within the Blackwater Falls State Park, is one of Tucker County's most popular attractions. The falls got their name from the amber-colored water, which is tinted by the tannic acid released from the red spruce and hemlock trees in the area. The 62-foot cascading waterfall creates a mesmerizing sight and is one of the most photographed locations in West Virginia.
