Upshur County, located in the great state of West Virginia, was established on March 26, 1851, and named in honor of Abel Parker Upshur, a distinguished Virginian and statesman. The county was created from parts of Randolph, Barbour, and Lewis Counties, and it encompasses approximately 354 square miles of land area. Its county seat is Buckhannon, which was settled as early as 1764.

Some crucial events took place in Upshur County throughout history. During the Civil War, the Battle of Buckhannon occurred in the county on June 30, 1861. Union troops successfully maintained their presence in the region, preventing Confederate advancement. In the 20th century, advancements occurred in the areas of transportation, education, and industry.

One notable fun fact about Upshur County is the existence of the West Virginia State Wildlife Center at French Creek. This 338-acre zoo and wildlife facility is a living showcase of West Virginia's diverse fauna, housing over 30 different species of mammals, birds, and reptiles native to the Appalachian region.
