Wyoming County is located in the southern region of the great state of West Virginia. It was created by an act of the Virginia General Assembly on January 26, 1850, from parts of Logan County, Virginia, which is now part of West Virginia. Wyoming County is named after the Delaware Indian word "Mecho-weami-ing," which means "in or by the large plains" or "large flat plains."

The county has a rich history partly due to its coal-mining heritage. The coal industry played a significant role in its growth, as the region is rich in natural resources such as bituminous coal, natural gas, and timber. The first coal mines began operations around the 1890s, resulting in a boom in population and economic growth. During this period, numerous towns and communities sprouted around the mines, many of which are still present today.

A fun fact about Wyoming County is that it is home to Twin Falls Resort State Park, a scenic and recreational area that features two beautiful waterfalls, along with a variety of recreational activities such as hiking, golfing, and fishing. Twin Falls Resort State Park, located between Pineville and Mullens, offers visitors a glimpse of West Virginia's beautiful landscapes and the opportunity to connect with nature.
