Campbell County, located in the northeastern part of Wyoming, covers an area of 4,804 square miles and was officially created on February 21, 1911. The county seat and largest city are Gillette. Campbell County's history is rooted in the culture of Native American tribes, the fur trade era, ranching, and the development of the coal and energy industries.

Originally, the area was inhabited by many Native American tribes, including the Sioux, Cheyenne, Arapaho, and Crow. European exploration in the region began in the early 1800s, and fur trappers and traders arrived, establishing Fort Phil Kearny in 1866. Later, the county was named after John A. Campbell, the first governor of the Wyoming Territory.

The arrival of the railroad in the 1890s encouraged settlers to move to the region. Agriculture and livestock played a significant role in Campbell County's economy during its early years, with cattle and sheep ranching being the primary industries. The land, originally part of Crook County, was primarily used for grazing.

A major turning point in the county's history came with the discovery of valuable resources such as oil, coal, and uranium. The energy boom began in the mid-20th century, and saw a rapid expansion of the coal mining industry, making Campbell County one of the top coal-producing regions in the United States. Gillette became an epicenter of energy development in the area, earning the nickname "Energy Capital of the Nation."

Fun Fact: Campbell County is home to the enormous open-pit coal mine, North Antelope Rochelle Mine, which is the largest coal mine in the United States by reserves. The mine alone accounts for over 10% of America's coal production, supplying coal to power plants across the country.
