Carbon County, established on December 16, 1868, is located in the southeastern part of the great state of Wyoming. The county was named for its plentiful coal deposits and initially covered a vast area, but several other counties were eventually carved out from it, reducing its present size. Spanning an area of approximately 7,964 square miles, the county is rich in natural resources like coal, oil, and natural gas.

Carbon County has played a vital role in Wyoming's history. Prior to its establishment, the region was occupied by the Ute, Sioux, and Arapaho Native American tribes. The arrival of European explorers and trappers, as well as the establishment of the transcontinental railroad in 1868, significantly impacted the region, attracting settlers and leading to the growth of the mining industry.

One of the county's largest towns, Rawlins, was named after Union General John A. Rawlins, who served as chief of staff to Ulysses S. Grant during the American Civil War. It began as a frontier town built along the railroad lines and became Carbon County's center of commerce and government.

Fun Fact: Carbon County is home to the mysterious 'Medicine Bow,' an ancient Native American Medicine Wheel located in the Snowy Range Mountains. The Medicine Bow is a sacred site with spiritual significance that remains an important part of Native American cultural heritage.
