Crook County is located in the northeastern part of the great state of Wyoming, USA. The county was established on December 8, 1875, and was named in honor of Brigadier General George Crook, a prominent US Army officer and Civil War veteran best known for his service during the Indian Wars.

The region's history can be traced back thousands of years to the Native American tribes that initially inhabited the area, including the Crow, Sioux, and Cheyenne. Throughout the 19th century, the region saw the westward expansion of European settlers and witnessed the Gold Rush, cattle ranching, and the construction of the railroad.

One of the most notable events in Crook County's history is the establishment of the Sundance Kid legend. The infamous outlaw Harry Alonzo Longabaugh, also known as the Sundance Kid, earned his nickname after being imprisoned in the Sundance Jail in the town of Sundance, the county seat of Crook County, in 1887 for stealing a horse.

Today, Crook County is home to various popular attractions such as Devils Tower National Monument, which was the United States' first National Monument, declared in 1906 by President Theodore Roosevelt. The Devils Tower is an impressive geological formation that rises 1,267 feet (386 meters) above the surrounding landscape and is considered sacred by many Native American tribes.

Fun Fact: The popular 1977 science fiction film "Close Encounters of the Third Kind," directed by Steven Spielberg, prominently features Devils Tower. This helped bring nationwide attention to Crook County and its unique geological attraction.
