Fremont County is located in the central part of the great state of Wyoming. Established on March 5, 1884, it was named in honor of John C. Fremont, an American explorer, military officer, and politician who played an important role in mapping and surveying the western portion of the United States. The county is rich in Native American history as it is home to the Wind River Indian Reservation, which is shared by the Eastern Shoshone and Northern Arapaho tribes.

Fremont County encompasses an area of approximately 9,266 square miles, making it the fifth-largest county by land area in Wyoming. The county seat, Lander, played a vital role in the westward expansion of the United States as it was a popular stop on the Oregon, California, and Mormon Pioneer Trails.

One fun fact about Fremont County is that it is home to Sinks Canyon State Park. This natural wonder features the Popo Agie River, which vanishes underground near the mouth of the canyon and reemerges in a large trout-filled pool called "The Rise" about half a mile down the canyon. This unique geological feature attracts visitors from around the world, making Fremont County an integral part of Wyoming's tourism industry.
