Johnson County is located in the northeastern part of Wyoming, United States. Its county seat is Buffalo. The area was originally inhabited by Native American tribes like the Sioux, Cheyenne, and Crow. European settlement in Johnson County began in the mid-1800s, mainly due to the westward expansion of the United States.

In 1863, the Bozeman Trail was established, which passes through Johnson County. The trail served as an important travel route for gold prospectors and pioneers heading to Montana. However, the conflict between the Native Americans and the settlers led to several skirmishes and battles, including the infamous Red Cloud's War (1866-1868).

Johnson County was officially established on December 8, 1875, and named after E.P. Johnson, a lawyer and politician from Cheyenne. The county became part of the Wyoming Territory in 1869, and later became a part of the state of Wyoming when it achieved statehood in 1890.

Cattle ranching, agriculture, and mining became the primary drivers of its economy in the late 1800s and early 1900s. However, Johnson County is also known for its involvement in the Johnson County War (1892), a range war between wealthy cattle barons and small ranchers over land and cattle ownership.

Fun Fact: Johnson County, Wyoming, is home to the "Hole in the Wall," a natural red sandstone geological formation that was a notorious hideout for several infamous outlaws, such as "Butch" Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, during the late 1800s and early 1900s. This hidden spot provided these outlaws with a well-protected base for their operations, and acted as a staging area for their robberies and escapes.
