Laramie County is located in the southeastern corner of Wyoming, a state in the mountain region of the Western United States. Established on January 9, 1867, as part of the original Dakota Territory, Laramie County predates Wyoming's statehood, which occurred later in 1890. The county was named in honor of Jacques La Ramie, a French-Canadian trapper who explored the region during the early 19th century.

The city of Cheyenne, the capital of Wyoming, lies in Laramie County and serves as its county seat. Cheyenne was founded in 1867 primarily as a central point for the construction of the Union Pacific portion of the First Transcontinental Railroad. The nearby Fort D.A. Russell, now known as Warren Air Force Base, was established in 1867 to protect the railroad workers from potential conflicts with Native Americans.

The development of the railroad and the presence of Fort D.A. Russell catalyzed rapid population growth in Laramie County, and it became a hub for various industries, such as cattle ranching, agriculture, and energy production. The county embraces its Western heritage, which can be viewed through events such as the annual Cheyenne Frontier Days, the largest outdoor rodeo and Western celebration in the United States.

A fun fact about Laramie County is that the State Capitol building, located in Cheyenne, features the highest elevation of any capitol building in the United States, sitting at 6,030 feet above sea level.
