Natrona County, located in the central part of Wyoming, was created on April 14, 1888, from the southern portion of Carbon County. It derived its name from the deposits of natron, a natural mineral found in the region's lake beds. Natrona County encompasses an area of approximately 5,340 square miles, with the county seat being the city of Casper.

The region boasts a rich historical background, with its first known inhabitants being the Paleo-Indians around 14,000 to 12,000 years ago. Later, Native Americans such as the Shoshone, Arapaho, and Lakota Sioux tribes resided in the area. European exploration of the region first began with the famous fur trapper and mountain man Jedediah Smith around 1823. Subsequently, the area played a crucial role in America's westward expansion through the late 19th century, with the Oregon, Mormon Pioneer, and California Trails crossing through Natrona County.

The arrival of the Chicago and North Western Transportation Company railroad in 1888 significantly contributed to the inception of Casper and further development of Natrona County. Casper was founded near the former site of Fort Caspar, a military post established in 1865 to protect emigrants and the telegraph line.

The discovery of oil reserves in 1890 at Salt Creek Oil Field drove growth in the economy of the region. By the early 20th century, Casper emerged as a regional oil hub and was nicknamed "The Oil Capital of the Rockies."

A fun fact about Natrona County is that it includes a geographic oddity called Hell's Half Acre, located about 40 miles west of Casper. This striking landscape covers 320 acres and features unique rock formations, deep ravines, and colorful soil layers. Due to its alien-like appearance, it was used as a filming location for the movie "Starship Troopers" in 1997.
