Niobrara County is located in the eastern part of the great state of Wyoming. It was established on February 21, 1911, and named after the Niobrara River, which flows through the region. The county was created by separating it from Converse County, and forming a new and distinct county government.

The county seat is the city of Lusk, a small town with a rich historical background. At one time, the town was a bustling crossroads for those traveling along the Cheyenne-Deadwood stage route and later the Chicago and North Western Railway, which played an essential role in expanding the town and boosting its economy.

Niobrara County's history extends back to the prehistoric era, with the discovery of fossils belonging to various dinosaur species. One such find, the Lance Formation, is a Late Cretaceous geological formation in the county known for its wealth of dinosaur fossils.

Agriculture has historically been the primary economic activity in Niobrara County, with the main produce being cattle, sheep, grains, and hay. Today, the county has a land area of 2,628 square miles and as of the 2020 Census, its population stands at approximately 2,620 residents.

Fun Fact: Niobrara County is home to the Wyoming Women's Center, which is the state's only women's prison. What makes this facility interesting is that it was previously the Lusk High School building before being converted into a prison in 1981.
