Park County, located in the great state of Wyoming, was officially established on February 15, 1909. The county is situated in the northwest region of Wyoming, with its county seat in Cody. It encompasses an area of around 6,967 square miles, making it one of the largest counties in Wyoming. The county is named after the world-famous Yellowstone National Park, which covers a significant portion of the county.

The region has a rich history that dates back to prehistoric times and features evidence of human habitation dating back to over 11,000 years ago. Clovis points, a type of Paleo-Indian spear points, have been found in the area, indicating the presence of early hunters.

In the 1800s, European explorers, fur trappers, and traders began arriving in the region, but Park County remained sparsely settled. John Colter, a member of the Lewis and Clark expedition, explored the area in 1807, and he is considered the first European American to visit the region. In 1872, the establishment of Yellowstone National Park, the world's first national park, contributed to the county's growth.

Buffalo Bill Cody, a renowned frontiersman, and showman, played a pivotal role in the development of the city of Cody and the surrounding area in the late 1800s and early 1900s. He founded the town of Cody in 1896, which became the county seat when Park County was established in 1909.

Fun fact: Park County is home to Heart Mountain, the site of an internment camp during World War II that housed over 14,000 Japanese Americans. The site is now preserved as a historical landmark - the Heart Mountain Interpretive Center -, which focuses on telling the story of the internment experience and its impact on the Japanese American community.
