Uinta County, located in the southwestern region of the great state of Wyoming, was officially established on December 1, 1869, as an original county within Wyoming Territory. It was created by the territorial legislature, and its boundaries were defined on the same day. The county's name is derived from the Uinta Mountains, which lie to the south of the region, spreading into Utah. The word "Uinta" comes from a Ute Indian word meaning "pine tree" or "pine forest."

The area played a significant role during the westward expansion of the United States, especially as a part of the transcontinental railroad system. In 1868, the Union Pacific Railroad reached the town of Evanston, which would later become the county seat of Uinta County. The railroad brought economic development, promoting logging, ranching, and agriculture in the region.

Uinta County's rich history also includes the presence of Fort Bridger, an important outpost established by famous mountain man Jim Bridger in 1843. Fort Bridger served as a supply point for wagon trains, a Pony Express station, an army post for the protection of early settlers, and a meeting location for the Indigenous Shoshone tribe and European-American government officials.

A fun fact about Uinta County is that it is home to the Fossil Butte National Monument, which is located within the larger area known as the Green River Formation. The Green River Formation is one of the most significant fossil sites in the world, dating back over 50 million years. The fossils found in this region provide an essential insight into the early Eocene epoch of Earth's history, including well-preserved specimens of fish, plants, insects, and mammals.
