Washakie County is located in the central part of the great state of Wyoming. Established on February 9, 1911, the county was named in honor of Chief Washakie, a prominent leader of the Shoshone Native American tribe who played a significant role in the area's history. The county seat and largest city is Worland.

The region was initially inhabited by various Native American tribes, including the Shoshone, Crow, and Arapaho. European-American settlers began moving into the territory in the mid-19th century. The arrival of the Chicago, Burlington, and Quincy Railroad in 1906 facilitated further growth and development of the area.

Historically, Washakie County's economy has been primarily driven by agriculture, specifically in sugar beets, barley, and livestock production sectors. The county also possesses rich mineral and energy resources, such as bentonite, gypsum, and natural gas, which have contributed to its economic growth.

A fun fact: Washakie County is home to the Wyoming Dinosaur Center, a renowned paleontological museum located in Thermopolis. This world-class facility not only showcases more than 30 mounted skeletons but also provides a unique opportunity for the public to participate in real dinosaur excavations, making it an exciting destination for both tourists and dinosaur enthusiasts.
