It is required not of one to be the most astute observer of, nor the most active participant in men's common affairs to identify the weak link in all such matters as being man himself. The colloquial saying "If you want something done right, do it yourself" refers precisely to the dichotomy of interactions of man with man and with material, with the animate and the inanimate. The latter has been at the mercy and service of man for millennia, and with each passing day man wins another battle in his eternal conquest of matter, exacerbating its subjugation at his hands. In contrast, the subjugation of man at the hands of men has proved as a pursuit to be as elusive as it is seductive. Throughout the ages men have tried and failed to measure man as one would a pendulum, tried and failed to find a law, a rhythm, or a periodicity to the motions of his mind and body. Unlike the pendulum or the clock, man's artificer is not wont to reveal to us the secrets of his animate creations (man being by far the most intricate of such), and what little he does yield to us he does only following an elephantine effort of the foolish inquisitor. Whether the day will come when man can read the face of his brother as he does the face of his pocket watch we cannot know. Indeed perhaps it is best the day not come, for it will be the day that man is reduced to the status of his pocket watch - after all, is it not the singularly complex mystery of man's internal motions that exalt him among other creeping things, as the same exalts the creeping things over the inanimate? From the above said I invite thou to descend back to the subject of this discourse, lest in chasing the ethereal we stray too far from the warm embraces of our earthly trifles. Man's dealings with the inanimate are a straight-forward affair, for the inanimate is bound eternally by a set of laws known to us, and these laws the inanimate has yet to dare transgress. Man, on the other hand, is by his nature wont to transgress all that can be transgressed, to violate all that had by his artificer or by fellow men been consecrated, and to be the perturber of the world's (albeit stochastic) equilibrium. By this nature, man's dealings with his fellow men are a tale wrought with uncertainty, and yield tales of betrayal, curses, and dismay. When a man orders his firewood to split, then, by the envoy of his axe, it is split. When he orders it alight, it is brought alight. But by man's own fault, through his dull axe or the unremarked dampness of his kindling, can his own hearth refuse to yield warmth. But alas, say that man does not chop his own wood or light his own fire, but places these tasks into the hands of another. Then, it is clear, precarious is whether he spends his evenings warm or frigid, for the wood splits certainly under the bit of the axe, but is liable to remain intact when bestowed to the man whose hand is not firm, whose axe is not sharp, or who, indeed, may have have his own pile of wood to attend to. For these reasons the wise man splits his own wood, and lights his own hearth, and by this avoids entrusting his warmth to the quivering, parlous hands of his fellow man. All thus is well, while the man's affairs are such that he is capable of attending to them himself. Consider then what is he to do who is unable to chop his wood, but desires not the bite of frost? Consider the man who desires to purchase property, but who lacks familiarity with the laws, decrees, and ordinances governing the land where he desires to establish his dwelling. Both of these men need an axe, the former the axe literal and the latter the axe of knowledge, but both are unable to wield it. They must then get another to yield the axe for them - a perilous predicament. Forced to surrender themselves to the chaos of interpersonal affairs, both men would seek someone who is as the axe he desires, who mimics the dependability and precision of the material, who understands his desire as well as the axe literal understands the laws of Newton, and whose wit and tact are shaped to navigate the exigencies of the property market as surely as the axe's head is shaped to overcome knots in a thick cut of oak. To find one with these qualities to be the executor of one's will is naught but a great blessing, for as discussed above men are wont, both in dependability as well as other qualities, to be the antithesis of matter. Both men described above would thus not seek this executor on their own, but would be wise to seek council from those who have dealt with such men or a particular one in times past, for their words are (for what worth men's words can have) worth much more than those of the party seeking to be employed by the man. We recently bought our first house and I doubt it would be possible without great help from Irina. She was with us during every single step of the process and is still here to help even though we closed a deal half a year ago. Any questions ranging from basics of the housing market, financing options, purchase process to foundation inspections and permits were always answered by Irina promptly, correctly and with a deep level of detail. I never knew that buying a house could be so much fun. It took us two months to find the right home and when the mission was accomplished, my husband and I felt like it was over way too soon.
