1. Sylacauga is known as the "Marble City" because of its marble deposits, which have been quarried and used for many famous buildings and monuments across the US, including the Lincoln Memorial and the US Supreme Court building.
2. Sylacauga is also home to the world-famous Hodges Meteorite, which fell to earth in 1954 and struck a local woman, Ann Hodges, while she was napping. This meteorite is the only known case of a human being hit by a meteorite, and it is now on display at the Alabama Museum of Natural History.
