The Alabama state quarter, designed by Clay and Molly Jenkinson, was released in 2003. It features a representation of Helen Keller, a blind and deaf woman who was born in Alabama, with a magnolia flower to the right. An inscription reads "Spirit of Courage." The magnolia flower symbolizes beauty, and the rope in Keller's hand symbolizes her never-ending efforts to help others. The rays of the sun represent her optimistic outlook on life. The Alabama state motto, "We Dare Defend Our Rights," is written in the top right corner. The quarter also includes the year of Alabama's statehood, 1819, and the year of the quarter's release, 2003.

The second Alabama State Quarter

The America the Beautiful Quarters program was launched in 2010 by the United States Mint to honor 56 national parks and other national sites. Each year, five new designs are released, featuring one site from each state, the District of Columbia, and U.S. territories.

The Alabama quarter, released in 2021, features a design depicting the state's Russell Cave National Monument. The design includes the entrance to the cave, a map of the surrounding area, and images of prehistoric tools. The design also features the state's motto, "We Dare Defend Our Rights." This phrase is a reference to a statement made by Andrew Jackson during the War of 1812.

Russell Cave National Monument is a site of archaeological importance in Alabama. It is one of the oldest and largest Native American sites in the Southeast, with evidence of human habitation dating back over 10,000 years. The cave has provided archaeologists with valuable insight into the lives of prehistoric people, including their diets, tools, and art. The quarter serves as a reminder of the state's rich history and cultural heritage.
