One fun fact about Rough and Ready, California is that it is the only mining town in California that seceded from the Union. In 1850, the residents of Rough and Ready became fed up with the state government's mining taxation policies and declared themselves the "Great Republic of Rough and Ready". The secession lasted for three months before the town finally rejoined the Union. Today, the town celebrates the event by holding an annual "Secession Days" festival.
