One interesting fact about Macon, Georgia is that it was once home to the first African-American mayor of a city in the southern United States. In 1963, Reverend C. Jack Ellis was elected as the mayor of Macon, making history as the first black mayor in the South. He served two terms and was known for his efforts to bridge racial divides in the community. In 2011, Macon named a street in honor of Ellis, recognizing his contributions to the city's history.
