Long County, Georgia, is located in the southeastern part of the state, and it was established on February 14, 1920. Named after Dr. Crawford W. Long, a pioneering physician known for his significant contribution to the medical field by being the first to use ether as anesthesia during surgery.
Before the establishment of Long County, the area was inhabited by Native American tribes, such as the Creek and Seminole, which later gave way to European settlers and was a part of Liberty County. The county seat, Ludowici, was originally known as Johnston Station and was a significant stop on the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad. Ludowici gained prominence due to its roof tile factory, Ludowici-Celadon Co., which produced the famous "Ludowici Tile" - a sought-after product for exclusive construction projects across the country.
A fun fact about Long County is that it is home to the historic Jones Creek Baptist Church, built in 1810, which is one of the oldest wooden church buildings still in use in Georgia. The church was also instrumental in founding several other churches in the surrounding area during the 1800s, earning it the nickname "Mother of Churches."
