One interesting fact about Meredosia is that it has a rich history in the timber industry. It was once known as the "Sawdust Capital of the World" due to its many sawmills and logging operations that harvested timber from the nearby Illinois River valley. In fact, the village was named after a prominent Native American leader who was known for his skills in logging and timber harvesting! Today, Meredosia is still home to a large grain elevator and barge loading facility that handles millions of bushels of corn and soybeans each year.
