Pulaski County, Illinois
.Pulaski County is located in the southern part of Illinois and is named in honor of Polish-born American Revolutionary War hero Casimir Pulaski. The county was officially established on March 3, 1843, from parts of both Alexander and Johnson Counties. Its county seat is Mound City, which was founded by Major General Moses M. Rawlings in 1857.
One of the interesting historical episodes in Pulaski County was the Battle of Mound City, which took place during the American Civil War in 1862. This naval engagement involved Union forces successfully defending the strategically important Mound City dry dock against Confederate forces who were trying to disrupt Union supply lines on the Mississippi River.
Another historical fact is that the area around Pulaski County was once populated by Native Americans belonging to the Mississippian culture, who built earthen mounds for religious and burial purposes. Some of these mounds can still be seen in the county today, such as the ones at Mound City National Cemetery.
Pulaski County also played a role during the Underground Railroad as it served as a significant stop for enslaved people seeking freedom in the northern states and Canada. The county's close proximity to the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers provided enslaved people with valuable transportation routes and support from local abolitionist societies.
A fun fact about Pulaski County is that it is home to a local birdwatching hotspot, Mermet Lake Conservation Area. This 2,630-acre site is an important habitat for migrating bird species and a popular destination for bird enthusiasts to observe a wide variety of species, including waterfowl, shorebirds, raptors, and songbirds.
