Saint Clair County is located in the southwestern part of the great state of Illinois. Established in 1790 by the government of the Northwest Territory, it is the oldest county in Illinois. The county was named in honor of Arthur St. Clair, a Revolutionary War general and the first governor of the Northwest Territory. Initially, it encompassed much of the Northwest Territory and later the Illinois Territory before shrinking to its current size. The county seat is located in the city of Belleville.

Saint Clair County played an important role in the early history of the United States. Cahokia, one of the oldest settlements in the region, was the site of the largest pre-Columbian Native American city in the United States. Mississippian culture thrived in this region around 600-1400 A.D. Additionally, French explorer Robert Cavalier de La Salle passed through the county in 1682 when he explored the Mississippi River.

During the early 19th century, the county became a hub for transportation and trade due to its strategic location near the Mississippi River. This made it an important region for the growth and development of the United States.

A fun fact about Saint Clair County is that it is home to Scott Air Force Base, which was established during World War I in 1917. This installation provides support for a variety of military operations and has played a significant role in national defense throughout its history.
