Knox County, located in the great state of Indiana, was officially established on June 20, 1790, making it one of the oldest counties in the state. The county was named in honor of Major General Henry Knox, who served as the United States Secretary of War in President George Washington's administration.
In its early days, Knox County was a territorial capital and included most of what is now Indiana, as well as parts of Illinois, Michigan, and Minnesota. Vincennes, the county seat, was founded in 1732 by French fur traders and is one of the oldest continuously inhabited European settlements in the United States west of the Appalachians.
Knox County has played a significant role in Indiana history, with important events such as the capture of Fort Sackville by General George Rogers Clark during the Revolutionary War in 1779. Vincennes University, founded in 1801, is also a landmark in the history of higher education in the United States. It was the first college established in Indiana and predates statehood by 14 years.
One fun fact about this region is that Vincennes holds an annual festival called the Spirit of Vincennes Rendezvous every Memorial Day weekend. It's a celebration of the rich history of the region, featuring reenactments, period costumes, crafts, food, and music from the 18th-century frontier period. Visitors can enjoy a glimpse into the life and culture of early settlers, traders, and Native Americans who once inhabited this area.
