Waite Park, Minnesota has an interesting claim to fame as the birthplace of the iconic American fast-food chain, Dairy Queen. The first Dairy Queen store was opened in Joliet, Illinois in 1940, but it was actually founded by a man named Sherb Noble from Kankakee, Illinois who had received permission to sell Dairy Queen's soft-serve ice cream mix at his ice cream store in Waite Park, Minnesota in 1938. So, technically, Waite Park, Minnesota can claim to be the birthplace of Dairy Queen.
