Keyes. The Oaks has a framework built of hand-hewn materials pegged together. Nails were used in the roof and weatherboarding. There are several sets of double entrances in the original rooms.The Oaks is the ancestrial home of the Liddell family. Mr. Lidell was a vice president of the Greenville, Columbus and Birmingham Railroad and editor of The Conservative, Carrollton's newspaper and also the oldest, continuously printed publication in the state.Extensive renovation has taken place on the dwelling with a five-bay facade, distinguished by a distyle portico with octagonal columns. The original Greek Revival built in 1848 comprises the front four rooms with 10 foot ceilings, each with refurbished fireplaces with gas logs. The side foyer and dining room with 12 foot ceilings, chandeliers and fireplaces were added in the 1860's. This stately area of the home offers 2 foyers, a beautiful staircase and refinished original heart pine floors. The primary bathroom wing and extraordinary room were added in the 1970's.
