Anaconda, Montana is a small city located in southwestern Montana, with a population of approximately 9,000 people. It was founded in 1883 as a copper smelting town and was once home to the world's largest smokestack. Anaconda was also the site of one of the worst environmental disasters in U.S. history, when toxic waste from the copper smelting process contaminated the land and waterways in the surrounding area. Today, Anaconda is known for its outdoor recreation opportunities, including fishing, camping, and hiking in the nearby mountains and national forests. Additionally, the city has a rich history and is home to several museums and historic sites, such as the Copper Village Museum and Arts Center and the Washoe Theater.
