Front of the US quarter dollar coin   North Carolina State Quarter

The North Carolina state quarter was issued in 2001 as part of the United States Mint's 50 State Quarters Program. It was designed by Joel Iskowitz and sculpted by Don Everhart.

The design features the Wright Brothers' first successful powered flight at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina in 1903, with the Wright Flyer in the foreground and the Wright Brothers' monument in the background. The outer ring features the state motto, "Esse Quam Videri," which means "To Be Rather Than To Seem," and the words "North Carolina 1789." The date at the bottom commemorates the year North Carolina became a state. The design also features the state flower, the dogwood.

The second North Carolina State Quarter

The North Carolina National Park quarter from the America the Beautiful Quarters series was released in 2021. The quarter depicts a view of the Wright Brothers National Memorial, which is located in Kill Devil Hills on the Outer Banks of North Carolina. The memorial honors the accomplishments of Wilbur and Orville Wright, who made the first successful powered flights in 1903. The design of the quarter includes the Wright Brothers Memorial, with the Wright Flyer taking off from the top of a sand dune. The inscription "First Flight" is included on the left side of the coin, and "Wright Brothers" is included on the right side. The coin also includes the inscriptions "North Carolina", "2021", and "E Pluribus Unum".

The coin is a tribute to the Wright Brothers, who are credited with making the first powered, sustained, and controlled flight in a heavier-than-air machine on December 17, 1903. The Wright Brothers Memorial, which was dedicated in 1932, stands as a tribute to the brothers' achievements and the advancement of aviation. The coin is also a tribute to the state of North Carolina, which is home to the Wright Brothers National Memorial and has a long history of aviation innovation.
