Thurston County, Nebraska
.Thurston County is located in the northeastern part of the great state of Nebraska, United States. It was established on March 22, 1889, when the Nebraska Legislature passed an act to form the county from part of the Omaha Indian Reservation. The county was named in honor of John Mellen Thurston, a prominent lawyer, railroad counsel, and attorney general of the Nebraska Territory in the late 19th century. Thurston played a significant role in the early development of Nebraska, particularly in attracting railroads and commerce to the region.
The county's original territories were made up of Winnebago and Omaha Native American reservations, and to this day, a considerable portion of the county's land is still owned by the Winnebago and Omaha tribes. The county seat and largest city is Pender, which was named after John Pender, an Englishman and major stockholder in the Chicago, St. Paul, Minneapolis, and Omaha Railroad.
One fun fact about Thurston County is that the Lewis and Clark expedition party passed through this region along the Missouri River in 1804, making contact with the Omaha tribe during their historic westward exploration. This encounter helped establish connections between Omaha tribal leaders and the United States federal government, which later lead to the signing of treaties and the formation of the Omaha Indian Reservation.
