One historical anecdote that took place in Yonkers, New York is the Underground Railroad. Yonkers was a key city in the Underground Railroad network during the 19th century. Many enslaved people who escaped from the South made their way to Yonkers, where they were given shelter and assistance by local abolitionists. One notable figure from Yonkers who was involved in the Underground Railroad was John Jay, the grandson of one of America's founding fathers, who helped to shelter and transport escaped slaves. The Peter Augustus Jay House in Yonkers was a stop on the Underground Railroad, and visitors can still see a hidden room that was used to hide escaped slaves.
