Ector County, Texas
.Ector County is located in the western part of the great state of Texas. It was established in 1887 and organized in 1891. The county was named in honor of Mathew Duncan Ector, a Confederate General during the American Civil War and later, a Texas jurist.
In its early years, Ector County was primarily a ranching community. The region's vast expanses of grasslands made it an ideal area for raising cattle. The discovery of oil in the late 1920s brought a significant boom to the local economy, and the petroleum industry remains a mainstay of the region to this day.
The city of Odessa, which serves as the county seat, was founded in 1881 as a water stop and cattle shipping point on the Texas and Pacific Railway. As the largest city in Ector County, Odessa has played a key role in the development of the area, especially after the discovery of oil.
One fun fact about Ector County is that it is home to the Odessa Meteor Crater, a rare meteor impact crater that is estimated to be more than 20,000 years old. The crater is approximately 550 feet wide and 100 feet deep and now serves as a popular tourist attraction with an on-site museum displaying meteorite fragments and providing information about meteorites and their impact on Earth.
