.Madison County, located in the great state of Texas, is situated in the rolling hills of East Texas's coastal prairie region. It was created on December 29th, 1853, from parts of Grimes, Leon, and Walker counties, and was named in honor of the fourth U.S. President, James Madison. The county seat, Madisonville, was named after the county itself.
The early settlers in Madison County were primarily Anglo-Americans from the southern United States. During the 1850s and 1860s, the county's economy was based on agricultural activities, with cotton serving as the primary crop. Some settlers raised cattle, and by the late 19th century, the timber industry also started seeing significant growth, contributing to the county's economic development. The arrival of the Houston and Texas Central Railway in 1904 played a crucial role in driving commercial and agricultural activity.
Throughout its history, Madison County has been known for its agricultural contributions to the state, a legacy that remains today. It ranks as one of the top cattle-producing counties in Texas, with ranching and hay production being important contributors to the local economy.
Fun fact: Madison County is home to the famous "Madisonville Sidewalk Cattlemen's Association." Formed in 1948, it originated as a group of locals who gathered on the sidewalk each Saturday to discuss the cattle market and sell a steer or two in a "mock auction." Today, the association hosts an annual barbeque to promote fellowship among members and to support local charities and scholarships.
