Oldham County, Texas
.Oldham County, located in the great state of Texas, was officially established on August 21, 1876, from portions of Bexar County. The county was named in honor of Williamson Simpson Oldham, who was a distinguished Texas lawyer, Confederate Senator, and a prominent supporter of the Confederate States of America. Oldham County is situated in the Texas Panhandle region and covers an area of about 1,501 square miles.
Vega serves as the county seat of Oldham County. The area was originally home to various Native American tribes, such as the Comanche and Kiowa, who lived a nomadic lifestyle on the open plains. In the late 19th century, buffalo hunters moved into the region, decimating the buffalo population, which significantly affected the way of life of the native tribes.
Ranching became the primary economic activity in Oldham County in the late 1800s, with the establishment of several significant ranches, such as the LS Ranch and the Diamond F Ranch, contributing to the area's growth. The arrival of the railway in the early 20th century, specifically the Rock Island Railroad, further facilitated access to markets, ensuring continued growth.
One fun fact about Oldham County is that in 1978, the county became the backdrop for the filming of the renowned movie "The Last Picture Show."
