Panola County is a picturesque region located in the northeastern part of Texas, USA. Established on March 30, 1846, the county gets its name from a Native American word meaning "cotton." Carthage, the county seat, was founded the same year as the county's formation and has since been its centerpiece.

The area that is now Panola County was once occupied by Caddo Indians before European settlers arrived. During the 1830s, significant numbers of settlers, primarily from southern states such as Alabama, Georgia, Tennessee, and South Carolina, began arriving into the region, attracted by its fertile lands for farming and the growing cotton industry.

Due to its prime location between two major waterway systems, the Sabine River to the east, and the Red River to the north, Panola County quickly became a significant hub for trade and transportation. During the first half of the 20th century, the discovery of oil, natural gas, and lignite in the county diversified the local economy, adding to the already thriving agriculture and timber industries.

One fun fact about Panola County is that it is home to the Texas Country Music Hall of Fame. Established in 1998, the museum exists to celebrate and honor the contributions of Texan artists in the country music industry. The museum features memorabilia, exhibits, and live performances, attracting music enthusiasts from around the world.
