Fort Belvoir is primarily a United States Army installation located in Northern Virginia, about 20 miles south of Washington, D.C. It is named after the patriot and statesman, George Belvoir Fairfax. The town of Fort Belvoir itself is essentially an extension of the base, with much of the surrounding area being designated as military housing, and as such, much of the town's population is made up of military personnel and their families. There are several amenities on base, including shopping centers, recreational facilities, and a hospital, and the town is also home to the Fort Belvoir Golf Club, and the Fredricksburg and Spotsylvania National Military Park. The base is a significant contributor to the local economy, and its location makes it a popular destination for military families and visitors to the Washington, D.C. area.
